Solar 101

Straight answers to common questions

What California homeowners ask us most — in plain English.

How does solar work?

Solar panels turn sunlight into electricity. An inverter converts it to the power your home uses. Anything you don't use right away goes to your battery (if you have one) or back to the grid for a bill credit.

How much can I save?

It depends on your usage, your roof and your utility's rates. Over 20+ years many homeowners save tens of thousands of dollars. We'll give you an estimate based on your actual bills — not a generic number.

What is NEM 3.0?

California's current solar billing rules (the net billing tariff) pay less for power you send to the grid than older plans did. Using more of your own solar — often with a battery — is the key to getting the most value.

How long does it take?

Usually 4 to 10 weeks from contract to completion. Most of that is design, permitting and utility approval — the installation itself is typically one to two days. Your homeowner portal shows the expected date for each step.

Do I need a new roof first?

If your roof has less than about 10 years of life left, it's usually smarter to replace it before solar goes on. We check every roof during the site survey and can do both.

What maintenance do panels need?

Very little. Rain does most of the cleaning. We recommend keeping an eye on your monitoring app — if production drops, call us.

How long do panels last?

Typically 25–30 years, and quality panels still produce about 80% or more of their original output after 25 years.

What happens in a power outage?

Solar alone shuts off during an outage for safety. With a battery like Tesla Powerwall 3, your home keeps running.

What equipment do you use?

Tier-one panels (our standard is REC Alpha Pure-RX), Enphase, SolarEdge or Tesla inverters, and Tesla Powerwall 3 or Franklin batteries.
